Vocabulary  Flashcard

Flashcard has been proven to be an effective tool for learning vocabulary words. Because of this, we use flashcards to help students improving their vocabulary. Each vocabulary type, (SAT | ACT), GRE or (TOEFL | IELTS) comprises a set of Vocab Lists (see above). Each list has 50 flashcards, and each card contains a vocabulary word which consists of a pronunciation, definition, synonyms, word usage, root word and multilangual (a translation of the word in Chinese, Spanish, Japanese and Korean for foreign students), see below. In addition, the desk of 50 cards is arranged like a carousel (i.e., merry-go-round) to make it easier for studying the cards. The carousel has four operation buttons - 'prev', 'autoplay', 'rewind', and 'next'. In particular, 'autoplay' is the most useful button, in which it goes thru each flashcard, displays the contents and pauses for a duration. This allows students to study and review the vocabulary words deligently without having to click the 'next' button. Repeating autoplay process can help students obtaining new vocabulary words quickly.

Quiz

Each Vocab List has a set of quizzes. To access the Quiz page, you must click a vocabulary type (e.g., SAT | ACT) on top of this page, and then click 'Quiz' on top of the next page. In the Quiz page, a synonym question is posed for each vocabulary word in the Vocab List. Use [Next Quiz] button to get to the next quiz. This allows studends to gauge their proficiency on the vocabulary. At the bottom of the Quiz page, there is a log table which shows the current and past quiz results.

Root  Words

One useful method for improving vocabulary is to study root, prefix and suffix words and to understand the composition of the vocabulary words. Sometimes knowing the root, prefix and suffix words can be helpful in guessing the meaning of a new vocabulary word.

Notes

Given limited resouces we have, we can only support this website in the latest Chrome browser running on Apple and Google devices. The quality of the pronunciations is spotty and can be improved. In addition, the autoplay audio on iPad and iPhone don't work due to an iOS limitation. While on autoplay, you should use pause button to stop the play; otherwise, it would become unhinged. Our focus on the GUI design is to make it easy for user to navigate and use. As a result, it works great on a big desktop or laptop screen, but not on a small mobile phone screen. It leads to many GUI shortcomings on the mobile phones including the truncation of displaying vocubulary words. Vocabulary words on the ACT is fairly similar to the SAT, at least in terms of difficulty. This also applies to TOEFL and IELTS. That's why we lumped (SAT | ACT) and (TOEFL | IELTS) together. Also we incorporated the Academic Word List (AWL) into the (TOEFL | IELTS) word list to make it more robust.
